SARAJEVO (BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA) I landed in the capital of Bosnia early in the morning , while the city was still waking up. It was the first time I was in this part of Europe, and I was pretty excited to see what is waiting for me. I heard many stories about the Bosnian war, but I was positively surprised while I was driving with a cab around the city. Moreover, it looks quite modern, though truth be told, here and there you can see the scars of the war. The hotel where I stayed is the greatest building in Bosnia, called The Avaz Twist Tower . The view was truly majestic. I arrived at the time when Bosnia was stricken with euphoria. For the first time in history football team qualified for the World Cup, and the whole city was excited . My stay was supposed to last four days, and for the four days I was supposed to see all the magic this city has. I must admit that weather was not so well. You could definitely feel the winter, especially because Sarajevo is a city located in the valley and surrounded with mountai ns. Because I’ve never been there, I found a private guide named Emir. Very pleasant guy. The first day we went to probably the most famous place in Sarajevo - BAÃ…  Ã„Å'ARÃ…  IJA! It is a place where you still see the remnants of the Ottoman Empire. Oedipus And Hamlet Essay Efthimios MariakakisProfessor Mihailovic5-14-01Though Shakespeares Hamlet and Sophocles Oedipus the King were written in two different eras, echoes of the latter can be found in the former. The common theme of Hamlet and Oedipus the King is regicide. Also, like in Oedipus the King, there is a direct relationship between the state of the state and the state of their kings.Furthermore, there is also a relationship between Oedipus armed entrance into the bedroom in which Jocasta hanged herself, and Hamlets confrontation of Gertrude in her bedroom.Both plays share the emphasis on a tragic irony in the chain of events that lead up to ritual of catharsis, but the plot of Hamlet makes a much more complicated character than that of the classic Greek tragedy of Oedipus the King. Sophocles Oedipus King and Shakespeares Hamlet both contain the basic elements of tragedy, although the Shakespearean tragedy expanded its setting far beyond that of the ancient Greek tragedy. The tragic hero of Hamlet finds himself burdened with the task of avenging his fathers death from the start of the play, and is not himself the source of Mariakakis 2the pollution of regicide, while Oedipus is of course the unwitting fashioner of his own doom, which is unveiled to him through recognition and repentance. Sophocles has Oedipus foretelling his own tragedy when speaking to the people of Thebes. The city suffers as a result of Oedipuspride, and irony is shown when Oedipus suggest that by avenging Laius he will protect himself, or that by getting children upon Jocasta, the dead kings wife, he will be taking the place of the son of Laius, which, unknowingly, is himself. I will bring it all to light I shall rid us of this pollution, not for the sake of a distant relative, but for my ow n sake (Knox, 10). The irony reaches its peak when Oedipus calls on the prophet Tiresias to help uncover the murder of Laius and seek an cure to the plague; the metaphor of vision is ironic in that the blind Tiresias can see what the seemingly brilliant Oedipus has overlooked, namely the kings crimes of incest and murder. You are the murderer, you are the unholy defilement of this land(Knox, 23). Tiresias goes on to say I say that without knowing it you are living in shameful intimacy with your nearest and dearest. You do not see the evil in which you live (Knox, 25). Mariakakis 3The other major ingredient of the tragic equation, the purging emotion, is worked out by Sophocles. I stand revealed -born in shame, married in shame, an unnatural murderer. Hamlet treats the crime of regicide from a somewhat Mariakakis 4different point of view, and the young hero becomes a tragic figure less through the sin of pride than through his character flaw. In the first act, after he i s conscious of the tormented ghost of his father walking on the ramparts, Hamlet goes to see for himself, and there he is convinced to avenge his father death by his fathers ghost. Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder (Act 1,Scene 5). Hamlets father is a symbol of his conscience and the corruption of regicide is laid at Hamlets doorstep. Hamlet is guilty because he failed to right this wrong, and the tragic flaw that emerges in his character is that of indecision. Although the king gives himself away at the performance of the play within a play; after watching the reenactment of his murder of King Hamlet he shouts,Give me some light. Away!(Act 3, Scene 2), Hamlet is still inconclusive, and winds up being sent away to England by the king and his mother and Hamlets insanity, feigned or not, has served him well. This Boy's Life # # This Boys Life In both the film and the book This Boys Life Tobias Wolff is surrounded by bad role models and terrible father figures. Wolff and his mother are constantly looking for the complete family life and find themselves in a series of bad situations on their quest. In the book Tobys relationship with his mother Rosemary is illustrated in a clear and deeper manner but the movie just didnt seem to focus on it enough. This paper will evaluate the portrayal of Tobys relationship with his mother and the men in their lives as told in the memoir and the film. The relationship that Toby has with his mother is a very strong bond. That is evident in the film and the book. But what Toby lacks in both versions of this story is a good father figure, which his mother seems to be always on a journey to find for him. Early in the book Toby has several misadventures with bad influences, whether they are friends or father-like figures. Roy seems to be one of the first influences to really catch the readers eye. He follows Toby and his mother all the way to Utah from Florida mostly just to be with Rosemary. Roy uses Toby to get to Rosemary in many ways, for example when he buys Toby the rifle or when he takes him to spy on Rosemary at work and follow her home. Roy makes this seem like it is a game to Toby and befriends him this way. This portrayal of Roy is very well done in the film, too. To me this is a very important part of the story in general, because after you read the book and see the film, almost all the men who come into Tobys life treat hi m in some way like Roy treats him. Anything it took to get to his mother seems to be the theme of the story. This behavior would have a very traumatizing effect on any young child at that time in their life, but with the influence Tobys mother has on him he is always trying to find a way out of bad situations. Another example to this theme would be the chapter in the book when Toby and his mother go to Alkai Point to watch the mock naval battle and they run into the two men. They had left Roy not long before that and moved to Seattle so they could escape him again. This must have worked, finally, because Roy does not try to find them for the rest of the story. This chapter is not used in the film and probably could have been omitted from the book, but it described even more the willingness of Rosemary to fall into any relationship that came her way. Toby seems to be jealous of these men giving his mother their attention and when they notice this they channel most of their attention on him. As the reader you automatica lly know what these guys are after, not the love for a boy or his favorite hobbies, but after the mother who just happens to be with him. And by acting like they are interested in Toby, they deceive Rosemary into thinking they are just nice guys. Eventually Rosemary gives in and meets with them that night and the outcome is very similar to her relationship with Roy. She comes home crying, feeling used, and taken advantage of. Moving forward very quickly, like the movie does. Rosemary is very quick to find someone new to be involved with, in comes Dwight. Dwights character is portrayed very well in both the film and the book. Toby still does not have a father figure in his life and you can sense Rosemarys urgency about getting one for him. Toby has now become a real troublemaker at school and on the streets. Wolff describes times when he and his friends would slam bikes into cars and steal and cause various problems. These are normal things for kids to do but some of those instances may have been a little extreme. Rosemary does not feel that Toby is a bad kid, even though she hears
